Testimonials Of Our Class

"Hey guys. The course with Josh Herman was just amazing and I would recommend it to anyone. There is so much that I've learned from him and gave me the confidence to tackle any task. The quality of Feedback that was given during the course helped me stay focus and positive. Can't wait to get started on the next class. Thanks Josh, Ryan, Travis and all the other awesome people for making this possible."

Danie J Pretorius

"I signed up for Josh Herman’s 3D Character Concepting Class with the intention of learning how to model hard-surface characters. However, I got so much more out this class. Through Josh’s class, I learned about the beauty of concept art, the value of iteration, and that just like any skill, concept art is something that can be learned in time, but accelerated with the proper mentorship. For the dedicated student, this class will push you to challenge yourself, test your artistic endurance, and will motivate you to problem solve on a weekly basis. I can’t thank Josh enough for helping me level up my technical and design skills. If you’re serious about working in the industry, don’t pass up this opportunity to learn from one of the best."

Michael Cabuco

"I'm a 20 year industry vet and i found Josh's class to be a blast. It was the extra push i knew i needed but didn't quite know HOW to get there. The class really help me put some things into personal perspective and i ended up being even more fearless when it was all over. Now I'm taking what i experienced in the ten weeks and I'm moving forward with more confidence, knowledge and a desire to produce even more."

MEET Josh Herman

Always inspired by art and drawing as a kid, character artist Josh Herman (Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, Iron Man 3) tried his hand at other things like business school, entrepreneurship, and auto-body mechanic before finally deciding to pursue art as a career. Raised in Colorado, he attended a local animation college and after graduating he moved to Hollywood in 2008 to continue his education at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects.

Immediately after graduating in late 2009 Josh began working at Legacy Effects working on movies like REAL STEEL, THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN, TOTAL RECALL, and THE AVENGERS. After that Josh left Legacy to try his hand at games and worked for Naughty Dog on Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception, but soon found himself back in movies and working for Marvel Studios working on titles like, IRON MAN 3, THOR: THE DARK WORLD, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, and THE AVENGERS : AGE OF ULTRON.

On the side, Josh loves to "pay it forward" and has taught Zbrush Character Creation at CDA in Pasadena, CA and currently teaches for CGSociety's CGWorkshops. He is currently developing his own IP's for short stories and games. Also, he has recently contributed to "Essence: Creatures" published by Ballistic.

Gather reference combining two or more different species and connect the dots between them in an original way.

  • Use Zbrush to establish a Block-Out using Primary Shapes
  • Break down form and work towards final sculpt resolution
  • Use Keyshot and Photoshop to render your concept before painting over it and creating your final illustration

Following Josh's examples Daniel Pretorius produced a Block-Out quickly

Design Exploration

Daniel then took his designs into ZBrush to refine the design and explore improvements as Josh had taught him.

Developed Form

Daniel Pretorius then fully fleshed out the sculpt, following Josh's reviews and critiques.

Daniel J Pretorius then completed his course project by rendering it in ZBrush, Keyshot and then painting over that in Photoshop to create his final product.
